The Ghost of Coxhoe Hall
By Bill Gething

Mr Gething - July 2002

When Puncture Jack came up this way
A Lancashire lad through and through
He's heard that a fortune could be gained,
This is all he had to do.

For anyone who dare'd to stay
In a room with the Coxhoe Hall ghost
A golden guinea was the prize.
He'd be the ghostie's host.

A candle would give him plenty of light,
His top coat would do for his bed
He made himself nice and comfortable
With his rucksack, a pillow for his head.

He'd be a very rich man in the morning,
But as he settled down for the night
The room filled with an icy draught
And the smell of a dead parasite.

He heard a weird voice close by,
"There's only thee and me," it sighed
The hair that he had stood up on end
The candle flickered and died.

Twice again he heard that weepy voice
The deathly smell much stronger.
What good would the prize guinea be to him?
He'd be dead if he stayed much longer.

He know for sure he was not alone
As something brushed past his knee
"If I had this other shoe on," he said
"I swear there'll be only thee."

By daylight he was heading for home
As fast as he could peddle,
If the Olympics had been held in this county that day
He'd have won for himself a gold medal.

When the full moon rides high in the sky
Through Coxhoe Hall has long since gone
It's not wise to wander through the wood.
For the ghost still lingers on.
